History of Art

There’s a reason why art has been around as long as it has.
Today, the expansion of visual art is so great that it now includes not only painting, but architecture, dance, sculpture, music, poetry, film, photography, and comics. Of the list, however, the one that has been around the longest, that appeals to the most varied people, and that has the greatest impact on our senses is the medium of painting. It has never been enough for humanity to express ourselves with mere words. From the earliest times, the true expression of thought, feeling, emotion, all found their way out through drawing. Prehistoric cavemen showed their struggle with, and eventual dominance over, fearsome mammoths by scratching it out on the cave walls. Hieroglyphs in ancient Egypt were not just forms of communication, but were used as aesthetic designs in tombs to aid them in facing their biggest fear: life after death.
Art may have evolved in immeasurable ways since then, but its meaning and purpose remains the same. As Leonardo da Vinci, an artist in every sense of the word, said, “Pittura est cousa mentale”- “Painting is a thing of the mind.” The mind includes every aspect of our beings: brain, heart, soul, thoughts, emotions, and feelings. It’s not only people who label themselves artists who feel this intense need to spill out their feelings onto a blank canvas. It’s everyone. Think of the last time you were talking on the phone and doodling absentmindedly in the meantime. What do you think is going onto that piece of paper? Your subconscious thoughts, your inner desires, things that lay beneath the surface, that’s what. And for those of us who simply can NOT draw, as probably many of you are thinking right now? Well then, you of all people need to express yourself by finding other people’s paintings that coincide and agree with your own feelings.
Art is not just a pretty thing to look at, admire, and then forget. Art is a healer of both the mind and body. Scientific studies have proven this. A person’s state of being will shift from one of stress to one of deep relaxation, from a state of fear to one of creativity and inspiration, when exposed to art. There are stories of politicians who keep a roomful of artwork that contains nothing else but a chair. Thus, surrounded on all sides by paintings, they are able to sit down and de-stress. But, really, a whole room is not necessary. Looking at a single piece of art puts a person on a different brain wave pattern, and affects their autonomic nervous system, their hormonal balance, and their brain neurotransmitters. In fact, every cell in the body is affected, along with the person’s attitude, emotional state, and pain perception. Art is frequently used as an inspirational tool in hospitals: patients who are ill experience a renewed sense of hope, positivity, and a newfound ability to deal with difficulty, all of which, in turn, help the patient on the road to recovery.
It is true that in the not so distant past, art was expensive and considered a luxury that only the very wealthy could afford. However, with so many people recently taking to drawing, sketching, and painting, there are now so many, varied types of artwork available that there is something to appeal to each and every differing person’s taste. Not only that, but famous paintings can be repainted by some elite qualified artists for a fraction of the price of the original, with the same quality and attention to detail remaining undiminished. With all these options available, there are choices for every type of person’s preference as well as budget. Everyone can thus be exposed to art and to the inspiration it brings. Art not only inspires with its beauty, but also with its meaning. Painters can hide subtle hints about their ideas and opinions in their artwork, and the viewer will either consciously or subconsciously pick up on those ideas, and then will identify with that work. That is why it’s important to choose a work of art for your home or office that speaks to you, even if you’re not quite sure why. It will inspire you creatively and emotionally every time you look at it.
Art sure has come a long way from being scratched onto the walls of caves with a frayed stick. Although different styles such as watercolor, pastel, and acrylic have had their heyday and then faded out of popularity, there is one technique that has withstood the test of time and the trends of consumers, and that is art that is done with oil paints. Oil paintings have been popular since the fifteenth century. Paints that are oil-based lend a sense of realism to the painting that is nearly impossible to achieve with other techniques. Oil paintings have long been considered the most prestigious of all painting types, due to the ability of the painter to convey the drama and intensity of his subject. The artist is also able to achieve a much higher level of detail using oil paints. It is these kinds of paintings that are able to evoke the biggest and most emotional response from the viewer, and that will lead to inspiration. Whatever the case, being exposed to works of art on a consistent basis, whether it be at home, at the workplace, or when going out, is an important component for every person to lead a healthy, beautiful, and cultured lifestyle.

How to Choose the Perfect Art

Choosing the perfect art piece is not always an easy task. Art is highly subjective and therefore each individual will have certain pieces that appeal to him or her more than others.  If you’re choosing out art for someone else, try to notice what sort of things that person appreciates in terms of aesthetics.  You can get a good feeling for this by looking at how they decorate their living and/or work space.   When it comes to choosing the perfect piece of art for yourself, you should choose something that you like, something that speaks to you.  Some people say that it’s more important to find something that you like as opposed to something that looks good or “works” with a specific space that you have to fill.  Some people have a more conservative approach to buying art and some people are very eclectic and enjoy a wide variety of art and therefore simply buy art when it “speaks” to them as opposed to thinking about it too much.  As art is really so subjective, and is less practical then let’s say buying clothing or a set of new dishes, you should worry less about what is “perfect’ and focus on what is “perfect for you”!  A popular misconception is that the perfect piece of art is expensive. This is not the case!  Today, it’s possible to find first-class reproductions and repainted artwork of famous paintings at a very low price.  These paintings are actual oil paintings and not lithographs or posters.  Therefore, choosing the perfect piece of art is now easier because of the wide array of options to choose from. At PishPoshPaints we offer a large selection of repainted museum quality paintings (and many museums use reproduction paintings!). If you don’t find what you like, visit our Custom Oil Painting page to order a hand painted oil on canvas painting of your favorite picture or painting.

What is Reproduction Art?

Reproduction art, true to its name, is when art is reproduced without compromising on the original quality and medium.  Oil painting reproduction art, for example, is an oil painting replica of the original piece of artwork.  Reproduction art offers an affordable way to bring beautiful pieces of art into your life. Unlike lithograph prints, reproduction art appears as the original! In fact, many museums around the world use reproduction art as the quality of the painting is kept consistent but the actual original is protected.  Most artists cannot tell the difference between a piece of reproduction art and a piece of original art.   Reproduction art is usually hand-painted.  Highly skilled and talented artists create exact replicas of past masterpieces, bringing them to life time and time again.  The artists creating reproduction art is often trained in one specific type of art and many of these artists, while still creating their own piece of work, are able to make a living by creating reproduction art.  Recreating past masterpieces is no easy feat and only a few are able to do it well.  However, compared to the exorbitant costs of any original piece of art, these artists provide reproductions at a fraction of the cost. The customer doesn’t have to compromise on quality and they can own a beautiful piece of original artwork, an exact replica of their favorites famous painting, at an affordable price.  Reproduction art is indeed itself an art.  Those with a true expertise in reproduction have a unique passion for art and pay very close attention to detail (i.e., replicating the scent of the oil used in an oil painting)! At PishPoshPaints all our reproduction art is painted by highly skilled artist, unlike many of the competitors all the artists are professionally trained ensuring that all finished paintings meet the highest standards.

How to Hang the Perfect Piece of Art

Whether you are looking to hang Judaica Art, Classic Art or Modern Art its important to follow these steps and hang your beautiful painting correctly.

The perfect piece of art can tie together a room and breath life and personality into any given space.  The question of how to hang the perfect piece of art can easily turn the exciting moment to a stressful one.  We’ve all had the typical horror stories involving too many holes in the walls, trying to drill into a beam or hanging a picture that was too heavy and having the drywall rip and the glass frame shatter as the picture comes tumbling down from lack of support.  In order to safety and successfully hand the perfect piece of art, there are a few important rules to follow.  First, use picture-hanging hooks instead of just nails or screws.  They’re meant to keep the back of the painting intact and they’re a lot sturdier than they look.  Make sure you measure your artwork before buying hooks in order to make sure that you buy the hooks that are appropriate for the weight of your piece of art.  In order to balance out the weight, use two picture hooks.  It will help your piece of art stay level (especially when cleaning) and it is just a smarter and safer option.  Speaking about staying level, another trick is to use D-rings as opposed to a wire or twine on the back of the frame so there’s no slipping and sliding.  When hanging the perfect piece of art make sure to use a level, which is always better than just eye-balling it.   Hanging a piece of art is generally a task that’s best suited for more than just one person.   A helper can help you choose the best place on the wall and they can help you hold up the piece when measuring, marking and hanging.  Most important, the best tip when it comes to how to hang the perfect piece of art is to have FUN and get creative!

Lithographs Are A Thing of the Past

If you were looking for a reproduction of your favorite famous painting, until a short while ago you had to settle for a lithograph.  A lithograph is an old method of printing using a stone or metal plate.  It was first used in 1796 and is one of the main ways that art has been replicated since then.  Lithographs are now being replaced by hand painted oil paintings, also called oil reproductions.  These handmade oil reproductions are created on actual canvas and are complete recreations of the original work.  Skilled artisans who in the past would be called “forgers” create these incredible replicas.   Today, they are respected for their skills and museums even buy oil reproductions in order to preserve the originals while displaying the look-alike reproductions.   A museum, naturally, would never get away with displaying a lithograph.  What is most surprising about these oil paintings is that they are made available for a remarkably inexpensive price by PishPoshPaints.  Following simple economic principles, as the awareness has increased, the demand has increased.  As a result of companies such as PishPoshPaints, who are devoted to the love of art, people can now enjoy their favorite painting reproduced using oil on canvas as opposed to a lithograph.  With prices ranging from $90-$400, most oil reproductions are still even less expensive than most lithographs! The revolution of art reproduction is hand painted oil paintings and lithographs are a thing of the past.  They served an important part in the history of printing and art but  now you don’t have to settle on lithographs when you can own a hand painted painting for a low price, many times cheaper than lithographs!

Where Can I Buy Oil Paintings For Cheap?

Today, reproduction art in the form of inexpensive oil paintings is all the rage.   Now, it’s easier (and cheaper) than ever before to buy genuine oil painting, including reproductions of the most famous original pieces of art for a lot less than you might think!  These hand-painted oil paintings usually run anywhere between $50 – $300.  What many people don’t know is that these art reproductions are so true-to-life that museums all over the world use them in order to preserve the originals and most people (even artists, critics and art aficionados) cannot tell the difference!  Before, if you wanted to look at your favorite famous painting day in and day out you’d either have to buy an apartment in Paris, New York, London, etc., or buy a lithograph or poster.  Today, you can actually enjoy your favorite oil painting in its true form – for cheap!  The best place to find a huge selection of oil paintings for cheap is online.  Websites specialize in different genres including religious jewish art, or art by specific period.   You save money buying oil paintings online because unlike a store-front, which costs a lot of money to run (think about space, storage, lighting, staff, insurance, etc)., a website can cut these costs by creating an online store where you can easily browse through all their inventory and storing them safely in a warehouse (much more cost effective).  In return, the money they save is passed onto the client. This is why buying oil paintings online is the cheapest and best option.

Hanging Your Painting

Okay, so you’ve ordered your favorite painting from PishPoshPaints and the deliveryman has just dropped it off. You stare at it, still nestled in the box, resplendent in all its beauty and glory, and think, now what? Hanging paintings properly is in itself a form of art that not so many have a natural knack for. However, with these few handy tips, you can become a pro.

The first step is to consider where you’re hanging your new piece. If you have large, bare walls that need decorating, they look best with one or several large paintings. Don’t put up a smaller sized painting alone or it will get lost in the background. If you have plain, light walls, you can showcase more delicately toned pictures, like soft landscapes. If you have plain, dark walls, boldly colored oil paintings with ornate frames will work the best. If you have patterned wallpaper, be careful to select artwork that blends with the dominant color of the background.

Always hang your painting at eye level. The human eye will discern the harmony of a room if all the artwork is hung at the same level. A good standard to measure for eye level is sixty-four inches from the floor. Place the center of your painting at that height.

Another rule of thumb to always keep in mind is to never hang a picture frame too close to a corner. A painting in the corner of the room gives the whole area a cramped and unsettling feeling, which is one thing you certainly don’t want for your brand new work of art.

The trickiest part is hanging multiple paintings. First, choose one to be the focal point. It doesn’t matter if it’s large or small, bright or dark, this one will be your centerpiece to draw the eye towards the collection. Next, arrange all the other pieces radiating out from that center, like the sun’s rays, surrounding it. If you’re still unsure about the proper placement, lay the artwork on the floor in different arrangements, and stand on a chair to view from above so you can best decide which positioning is the most appropriate.

As long as you keep these basic rules in mind, you will be able to showcase your new work of art, whether Judaica Art, Classic Art or Modern Art  to its fullest potential, and your painting will look like what it really is: a masterpiece.

Different Painting Techniques

All artists choose their own medium when producing original art. Of course, each artist will prefer his or her own method for various reasons. I would like to outline the pros and cons of each technique so as a buyer, you can decide for yourself whether or not an oil painting from our catalogue is the best choice for you.

Paintings that are done with acrylic paints have the advantage of being resistant to aging because they are unaffected by light. Acrylic paints are the easiest to handle; however; since there is such a fast drying time it is difficult for the artist to make any corrections once the painting has dried, and forces him to work as quickly as possible to avoid the colors drying while still on the palette.

Watercolor painting was born from dry powder pigments dissolved in water and rubber. Watercolors have a delicate, transparent feel to them. Some artists prefer this, as it gives off a floaty, diaphanous romanticism, but many others find it hard to achieve coherency and vividness with such a lackluster palette and muted colors.

Oil paintings have been popular since the 15th century. Oil-based paints lend a certain sense of realism to the painting that is nearly impossible to achieve with other techniques. Oil paintings have long been considered the most prestigious of all painting types, due to the ability of the painter to convey the drama and intensity of his subject. The artist is also able to achieve a much higher level of detail using oil paints. This, and the fact that oil paint takes considerably longer to dry, makes corrections very easy.

The most eminent and celebrated paintings from all over the world were originally produced as oil paintings. At PishPoshPaints, all of our products are authentic, hand painted, oil on canvas paintings. Our catalogue is full of famous paintings, reproduced in the original technique that the artists used: oil paint. You will definitely be getting the most quality and distinguished commodity when you buy an oil painting, especially if you purchase it from PishPoshPaints!

Choosing the Perfect Painting

We know you’re busy. Choosing the right painting from hundreds of masterpieces can be confusing, overwhelming, and frankly, too time consuming to bother with. But with this simple guide, we can help you whittle down your options to the best possible choice.

The first thing you will need to do is define your space. If you’re thinking of putting a painting in your bedroom, you probably want a relaxing print, maybe a nice landscape with soothing colors. If the wall that needs decorating is a dining room or living room area, a busy, vibrant scene, with people and activities, is the best option.

You also need to consider color. A green wall doesn’t call for a painting with shades of green- this will result in a staggering effect that will eclipse all details. A better idea is to choose a painting with a dominant color that works well with your wall. You may want to try holding up different color swatches against the wall to see what works best.

The third factor that should influence your decision making process is size. Don’t be fooled into thinking that a blank wall should be completely filled up with your new painting. A proper amount of empty space should be left on each side. For example, a standard 24-inch by 36-inch painting should have at least 24 inches of wall space surrounding it.

If you’re thinking of doing a set, try to come up with a theme. Don’t forget the colors should complement each other as well. A nice idea is to have a set of three paintings, each depicting a different aspect of home life, or perhaps a different street scene. Don’t overdo it or put more than four paintings, or once again, the effect will be ruined and disagreeable to the eye.

With these simple guidelines, you should be able to choose the right painting fairly quickly. The most important thing of all, though, is to love the painting you choose. And try to have fun in the process!
